Theatre

--   publication date: May 2005  (last changed on: May 2005)

Theatre is something which I am passionate about, and traces of which appear in a number of my hobbies.
For instance, I am a frequent visitor of theatre shows, especially musicals and musical programmes. Musicals I like a lot are "Mamma Mia", "Chicago", but also theatre-esque productions like "Passion". When it comes to musical programmes, I am very much fond of female vocalists such as Astrid Seriese, Julya Loko, and Karin Bloemen. And although I am not much of a fan of circus performances, I will never pass an opportunity to attend a show of "Cirque du Soleil".

Since a few years just passively watching theatre wasn't enough, so I started to get more actively involved in it.
It all started when, a few years ago, I attended a
theatresports match. Theatresports is a form of improvisation theatre where - at least in the Netherlands - there are two teams of four players which are 'competing' with eachother. Such a match involves so-called games, which are structures which help the players to play their scenes. The input for these scenes is supplied by the members of the audience, e.g. the audience decides where the scene will take place or what the relationships are between the various players.
Before we visited the theatresports match, we had never heard of "theatresports" at all so we had no clue as to what to expect. Not only did the match turn out to be very entertaining, it also gave me a strong feeling of "Hey, I want to do this!" and "I can do this!". Soon after that, I decided to do something with that feeling and I attended two theatresports courses at the "Utrechts Centrum voor de Kunsten". While attending the second course, I decided that I wanted to be more actively involved into theatresports than just attending a course, so I went to a few auditions of Utrecht theatresports groups. In January 2005 I succesfully passed the audition for the Utrecht theatresports group "Badmutz". Since then, I have been a proud member of this group. During each training & each match of this group I can experience that there is still a lot to learn when it comes to theatresports: playing theatresports well is not something which you can learn 'just like that'. It really is very hard work!

Apart from theatresports courses, I have also attended two "Kleinkunst" courses (which is sort of a mix between cabaret and stand-up comedy). "Kleinkunst" differs from theatresports in that it is much more substantial: you spend much more time working on something and perfecting it than you would in theatresports.
And I just might be attending some courses in the area of singing/vocal techniques, as singing is something which I love to do as well. Oh, so many fun things to do, and so little time...
